ORIGIN

Belgian porphyry, a magmatic igneous rock of excellent quality, is a natural stone with a rich history and a unique appearance. This stone has been mined for centuries in the Rebecq area and is known for its durability.

The unique properties of Belgian porphyry make it a popular material in the building and construction industry. Today this stone is used as granulate for railroad ballast, concrete, asphalt… because of its outstanding properties. However, it used to have another important use, silk cobblestones. Belgian porphyry cobblestones have been used far beyond the country’s borders. The Netherlands, France -the cobblestones of Roubaix-, Red Square, Moscow and Brooklyn, New York. In America, they have even been dubbed “Belgian block streets.” The distinctive green to blue-gray or pink-green color of Belgian porphyry gives a characteristic appearance to any project in which it is applied.

Because of its high degree of durability, resistance to wear and weathering, Nijst Natuursteen has dedicated itself to reprocessing this quality stone into unique products. Belgian porphyry is an excellent choice for both interior and exterior applications, where it retains its beauty for years.
